Baltic Triangle Competition Submissions

The Baltic Triangle is a neighbourhood in Liverpool mostly made up of old warehouses and industrial buildings now converted in creative studios and tech start-up spaces. In a bid for rejuvenation, they started a competition to redesign their regional logo to accompany their #BackBaltic bid.

Taking the shape of the area as it stands on the map itself, I took the old standalone triangle and made it 'the' Baltic Triangle and worked from there.

These designs have been posted by the Baltic Triangle social media pages, which you can view here:

1a - The simplest design; the general shape of the area as a standalone brand mark for use in print, embroidery, online, etc.

1b - Using the shape itself as a window to The Baltic Triangle

2 - Icon and wordmark; probably the option I would choose until the icon itself is recognisable enough to be associated to "Baltic Triangle" on its own

3 - A slightly more detailed version of the triangle, showing the actual limits of the area itself

5 - Triangular wordmark with a more traditional layout

6 - Wordmark using the shape of the region. More interesting, but possibly less versatile

7 - A very basic approach to the wordmark, replacing the A with a triangle to reduce and simplify the shapes

8 - Beginning to integrate the shape with the word itself, this replaces the A and intersects the lettering

9 - A variant of 8, the underlining helps cement the word as a title

10 - A bolder attempt at intersecting the word with the shape, I feel this is stronger than 8 & 9

12 - An experiment with the line variant, having the lines intersect each other. Possibly my least favourite entry, but has some interesting charm to it

14 - Returning to the wordmark and replacing the A with a triangle, this time integrating the Baltic Triangle itself. Due to its shape (and not wanting to extend the tracking or kerning), the triangle itself overlaps the lettering which I appreciate

15 - The final entry, keeping the simple wordmark and small triangular icon to simply say "Baltic [Triangle]". Nothing too clever, but definitely effective
